How to Respond When You Find Yourself in a Bad Mood

Sometimes I find myself feeling down and irritable unexpectedly, without comprehending why or how to change it. I’d like to share some insights here that I’ve learned which have helped me deal with this situation.

Figure out if there’s something wrong in your life that you’re ignoring or refusing to process. These feelings often rear their ugly head in the form of a bad mood when you’re idle and your mind doesn’t have anything else to focus on.

Assess your diet and exercise regimen. Inflammatory foods such as sugar and grease, as well as not moving your body, can cause sour moods.

Get busy, so you’ll forget you were ever in a bad mood. Start cleaning, organizing, or checking off some of those “honey-do” items you’ve been putting off. Being productive can help whisk away a bad mood.

Watch a funny movie. It is hard to stay in a bad mood when you find yourself laughing hilariously and enjoying yourself.

Don’t vent. It will only encourage the bad mood, not “get it out of your system”. Instead concentrate on positive things that usually put you in a good mood.

Volunteer your time for someone else. Check on your elderly neighbor, call a relative you haven’t seen in a while, or strike up a conversation with a lonely-looking stranger.

Do you ever find yourself in a bad mood and wonder how to change it? What do you do when you’re in a bad mood?
